I met Kerry and her daughter Eire at Shiplake College Wedding Fair. From our meeting I went on to design and make Kerry’s alternative engagement and wedding rings, using two gold rings that she had inherited from her grandmothers on both sides. During designing Kerry’s rings, she asked if I would meet with her fiancé Gwyn to show him some designs and discuss possibilities for his wedding ring as well.
I met with Gwyn, showing him an array of silver wedding ring samples from my portfolio. This gave Gwyn the opportunity to try different designs on, and to discuss ideas of mixing and matching elements from the different rings to be able to produce a ring that would reflect his character and sense of style. It’s always tricky with men’s wedding rings, especially if the groom doesn’t often wear jewellery – it’s important to get the design and functionality balance right, so they can feel confident and enjoy wearing their ring.
From this initial meeting, we honed in on Gwyn’s style and that he also wanted a gold ring that would match in tone with Kerry’s rings. After seeing designs from my portfolio Gwyn selected a rustic hammered design, combined in a wide, low profile, to be finished with a soft satin surface, also matching with Kerry’s rings.
With these key design features chosen, I was able to produce two quotes for Gwyn – one in 9ct yellow gold and one in 18ct yellow gold. This gave Gwyn the choice of two carats at two price points. As this was a special piece that will be treasured for years to come, Gwyn opted for 18ct yellow gold – the rich colour of the 18ct was also a factor in Gwyn’s decision making.
With a set design and a relatively simple make, I got to work at the bench and made up Gwyn’s rustic hammered ring straight into 18ct yellow gold. Before applying the final satin surface and sending the ring for hallmarking, I met Gwyn for a fitting. The ring then had a small adjustment in size, before it was ready for hallmarking and its finishing touches.
It’s always great to be able to produce a design that reflects someone’s personality and style. This rustic gold wedding ring was the perfect match for Gwyn, and was great fun to make. I’m really pleased with the final result and so happy Gwyn has a wedding ring he loves. This design is a great piece for alternative groom looking for something a bit different to tradition.
“So many people have commented on the rings and how beautiful they are. You did a splendid job. And of course, we absolutely love them too. Warmest regards.”Kerry & Gwyn
